What This Means for You

Understanding why light makes migraines worse doesn’t make the experience less unpleasant — but it can help you make sense of it. Migraine photophobia is a real neurological phenomenon, not an overreaction. Your brain is processing light through pathways that are directly connected to pain, and during an attack, those pathways become more active.

This understanding also highlights why “just avoid light” isn’t always the most helpful advice. While retreating to a dark room during the worst of an attack is a reasonable response — and one that most people with migraine do naturally — there’s some evidence that prolonged, habitual darkness may actually increase sensitivity over time. The goal isn’t to push through discomfort, but to find a balance that works for your particular pattern.
